White Turtlehead

Chelone glabra

A distinctive native perennial with clusters of white, turtle-head-shaped flowers that bring elegant late-summer color to moist gardens. White Turtlehead is an excellent choice for rain gardens, pond edges, wet meadows, and partly shaded areas where the soil stays consistently moist.

Its unusual flowers have a rounded, two-lipped shape that resembles a turtle's head, making this plant a memorable addition to native gardens. The flowers attract bumblebees and other pollinators, while the upright stems and glossy green foliage add structure throughout the growing season.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade

  • Soil moisture: Medium-wet to wet

  • Soil: Rich, moist soil; tolerates wet conditions

  • Height: 2–4 ft

  • Bloom time: Late summer to early fall

  • Flower color: White, sometimes tinged with pale pink

  • Native range: Eastern and central North America

Wildlife Value:

  • Important host plant for Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly caterpillars

  • Attracts bumblebees and other native pollinators

  • Provides nectar and pollen during late summer

  • Adds habitat diversity to wet meadows and moist woodland edges

Don't Worry If It Doesn't Flower Right Away:

Native perennials don't always flower their first year, and that's completely normal! Young plants often put much of their energy into developing a strong root system and establishing themselves in their new environment. Depending on the species, you may see limited or no flowering during the first growing season, with more substantial flowering beginning in year two and beyond.

Watering for Establishment:

For the best results, water your new plants regularly during their first 6 weeks after planting, particularly during periods of hot or dry weather. White Turtlehead thrives in consistently moist soil and is well suited to rain gardens and naturally damp areas. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, especially during its first growing season.

Plant for the future: The first year is about putting down roots. Give your native plants time to establish, and you'll be rewarded with stronger, more resilient plants in the seasons ahead.

Garden Use:

Great for rain gardens, pond edges, wet meadows, moist woodland borders, and native perennial beds. Its upright stems and distinctive flowers pair beautifully with Great Blue Lobelia, asters, and other moisture-loving native plants. Plant in groups to create a more noticeable display and support pollinators.

WNS Note:

Chelone glabra is especially valuable because it serves as a host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly, whose caterpillars feed on turtlehead foliage. It combines this ecological role with distinctive flowers and a tidy upright growth habit. Consistent soil moisture is key to helping White Turtlehead thrive in the garden.
