White Snakeroot

Ageratina altissima

NOTE:  White Snakeroot contains tremetol and is toxic to livestock and humans if ingested. Plant it where grazing animals and curious children are unlikely to consume it.

A graceful native perennial with airy clusters of bright white flowers that brighten shaded gardens in late summer and fall. White Snakeroot is an excellent choice for woodland edges, shaded borders, and naturalized areas where the soil is moderately moist.

Its fluffy white flower clusters stand out against its dark green foliage, attracting a variety of small bees, flies, butterflies, and other pollinators. The plant's adaptable nature and ability to grow in partial shade make it a useful addition to native gardens where many sun-loving wildflowers would struggle.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sun: Part shade to full shade; tolerates some sun with adequate moisture

  • Soil moisture: Medium to moist

  • Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; adaptable to woodland soils

  • Height: 2–4 ft

  • Bloom time: Late summer to fall

  • Flower color: White

  • Native range: Eastern and central North America

Wildlife Value:

  • Provides nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators

  • Attracts small flower-visiting insects

  • Offers late-season floral resources

  • Adds flowering habitat to shaded woodland gardens

Don't Worry If It Doesn't Flower Right Away:

Native perennials don't always flower their first year, and that's completely normal! Young plants often put much of their energy into developing a strong root system and establishing themselves in their new environment. Depending on the species, you may see limited or no flowering during the first growing season, with more substantial flowering beginning in year two and beyond.

Watering for Establishment:

For the best results, water your new plants regularly during their first 6 weeks after planting, particularly during periods of hot or dry weather. White Snakeroot generally performs well in moderately moist soil and appreciates consistent moisture while becoming established. Avoid prolonged drought during its first growing season.

Plant for the future: The first year is about putting down roots. Give your native plants time to establish, and you'll be rewarded with stronger, more resilient plants in the seasons ahead.

Garden Use:

Great for woodland gardens, shaded borders, woodland edges, and naturalized plantings beneath deciduous trees. Its airy white blooms pair beautifully with ferns, asters, and other shade-tolerant native perennials. Allow it to naturalize where appropriate, as it can spread readily by seed.

WNS Note:

Ageratina altissima is a valuable native wildflower for adding late-season blooms to shaded gardens. Its flowers provide resources for a variety of insects, and its ability to self-seed can help establish naturalistic colonies.

Sourcing:

Seeds were sourced from a wild population in Erie County, New York.
