Spotted Joe-Pye Weed

Eutrochium maculatum

A tall native perennial topped with large clusters of rosy-purple flowers. Spotted Joe-Pye Weed is an excellent choice for larger gardens, rain gardens, and moist areas where you want a dramatic late-summer flower display.

Its broad flower clusters provide an abundant nectar resource during a time when many other native plants are beginning to finish flowering. The tall stems also provide valuable vertical structure and remain standing into fall and winter.

Growing Conditions:

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil moisture: Mesic to wet
  • Soil: Moist, rich, and well-drained to poorly drained
  • Height: 4–7 ft
  • Bloom time: Late summer–early fall
  • Flower color: Pink to rosy-purple
  • Native range: Northeastern and central North America

Wildlife Value:

  • Excellent late-season nectar source for butterflies and native bees
  • Attracts a wide variety of pollinating insects
  • Seeds may provide food for birds
  • Tall stems provide seasonal habitat and structure

Don't Worry If It Doesn't Flower Right Away:
Native perennials don't always flower their first year, and that's completely normal! Young plants often put much of their energy into developing a strong root system and establishing themselves in their new environment. Depending on the species, you may see limited or no flowering during the first growing season, with more substantial flowering beginning in year two and beyond.

Watering for Establishment:
For the best results, water your new plants regularly during their first 6 weeks after planting, particularly during periods of hot or dry weather. Once established, many native plants are relatively drought tolerant when planted in an appropriate location for the species.

Plant for the future: The first year is about putting down roots. Give your native plants time to establish, and you'll be rewarded with stronger, more resilient plants in the seasons ahead.

Garden Use:
Great for rain gardens, wet meadows, pond edges, moist garden beds, and larger native plantings where you want height and late-season color.

WNS Note:

Eutrochium maculatum is a straight native species, not a cultivar, selected for its ecological value and late-season wildlife resources.
